The Saubhagya Yojana will include access to electricity to all willing households, substitution to kerosene, improvement in educational and health services, improvement in communication and public safety.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched the Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana ‘Saubhagya’, the scheme for easy electricity to every household. Speaking at the launch of the scheme, Modi announced that the government will provide free electricity connections to four crore rural homes so that the poor can have access to power. The decision will cost the government Rs 16,000 crore which will not be passed on to the poor, Modi said. He said the connections will be delivered at the doors of the rural poor for which they would not have to go after the government officials.
He also inaugurated the Deendayal Urja Bhawan on the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya during the programme in New Delhi in the presence of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and RK Singh.
The total purview of the Saubhagya Yojana is pegged at Rs 16,320 crore and it will be funded largely by the government at the Centre. The Yojana will include access to electricity to all willing households, substitution to kerosene, improvement in educational and health services, improvement in communication and public safety. The scheme will also bring in increased job opportunities and better quality of life, especially for women in daily chores.
Modi added that the staggering amount of Rs. 16,000 crore will be spent to bring a monumental change in the lives of the poor. Adding that 3,000 villages remain unelectrified from 18,000 villages that were without power three years back, PM Modi said that India is moving towards becoming electricity surplus from the deficit.

Government notifies Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules 2017.

Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has notified new Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules 2017 to prohibit range of activities in wetlands. The new rules will replace earlier rules notified in 2010.  Wetland  Wetland is transitional land between terrestrial and aquatic eco-systems where water table is usually at or near surface or it may be land covered by shallow water. Rajnish Kumar new SBI chairman as Arundhati Bhattacharya retires

Rajnish Kumar, 59, the senior most of the managing directors at State Bank of India (SBI), will become the 25th chairman of the country’s largest lender, succeeding Arundhati Bhattacharya, who is set to retire on 6 October. The government on Wednesday announced his appointment for three years. Kumar currently is in charge of retail banking at SBI. Kumar’s appointment comes at a time when SBI’s profitability is under strain because of ballooning bad loans and sluggish credit growth. At the end of June, the bank was weighed down by gross non-performing loans of Rs1.88 trillion. Gross bad loans account for almost one-tenth of its total advances. SBI is also the lead bank in a majority of the 40 cases referred for bankruptcy proceedings at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). “Asset quality is a challenge.
